Skill Builders with Renae Allen
Longarm teacher Renae Allen realized that her students needed a project before the project so they could build on basic skills. They needed to learn the rhythm, the motion, the repetitive motion and the motor skills of longarm stitching. She developed Skill Builders, a fabric printed with all kinds of lines to use as a stitching guide. Arrows and numbers show the thread path minimizing stops and starts. Renae demonstrates using the Versa Tool byHandi Quilter to make smooth lines. And for the person who can’t stand to throw anything away, she shows a large tote bag made by using the fabric with a pretty backing.

Realistic Quilting for Pictorial Quilts with Cathy Wiggins
Cathy Wiggins has come a long way from her background in telecommunications with degrees in math and software engineering to teaching quilting. She always had painted with watercolors and acrylics on paper, but now is painting on fabric and using fusibles extensively. She’s known for her whimsical designs but is now moving towards more realism in her work. Fusibles present their own set of challenges when quilting through all the layers and Cathy gives us lots of hints. She uses Hobbs Bonded Fibers 80/20 batting with an additional layer of wool batting on top. Superior Threads 30 or 40 weight threads also give a perfect finished look by filling the holes made by the needle. Consistency is the key…don’t add too many elements to the quilting design. Cathy shows us how easy it is to add grass and foliage designs as fillers. Remember…always start quilting at the bottom of the quilt and work up as you can see where you’ve been.

It’s All About the Thread
Heather Purcell, a.k.a. Mother Superior, joins Jodie to tell us all about threads, specifically Superior Threads which she owns with her husband Bob. She presents a quilt show of quilts she has designed to showcase each of their special threads. In this segment, Heather tells us why the strong core of Superior metallic keeps it from fraying and breaking as other brands do and she adds helpful hints for perfect stitching. Next up, quilts stitched with Rainbow threads showing how effective the 1” color changes are. Then, the ever-useful Superior MonoPoly invisible thread which is made from monofilament polyester rather than the normal nylon making it soft rather than wiry.

Third Time’s a Charm
For her third appearance on Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show Kimmy Brunner shows us that if you are looking for precision work that mimics the perfection of computerized quilting, templates and rulers are your new best friend. Kimmy uses templates on almost every quilt either to create intricate and precise designs or to create the bones or skeleton of the design that she will later fill in with freehand work. Using a couple of her favorite template she stitches out a star design that works for blocks, borders and sashing and follows up with a review of what you’ll need to get started.

Shop owner Leslie Main shows us the ins and outs of the HQ Pro-Stitcher, the most advanced computerized quilting software available for the home longarm quilter. With the touch of a few buttons she makes a placemat from piecing to quilting to attaching the binding right on the longarm with the machine magically stitching away on its own with perfect precision. Plus she demonstrates several methods of applique so you can choose your favorite. Wow! Technology brings the art of quilting to the 21st century.

The longarm machine was invented for quilting quilts, or so we thought. Leave it to the imagination of gifted artists like Ellen Anne Eddy to take the longarm to places that astound us. The longarm machine and threads become her pen and ink and her hand painted fabrics are the paper as she quilts, bringing her magical world of colorful creatures to life before our eyes.
